Rehabilitation Centers Offer Hope for Variety of Conditions

April 2nd, 2011

When people hear the words rehabilitation centers, they may automatically think of an alcohol rehab center or another addiction for which they would seek treatment. Conditions such as alcoholism, illicit drug addiction, prescription pain medicine addiction, eating disorders and even gambling addiction are all good reasons to seek therapy from professionals. However, not all rehab centers are for the treatment of addictions.

Some rehabilitation centers offer occupational and physical therapy as well as treatment for mental illnesses. Where physical therapy seeks to return a person’s strength and movement abilities, occupational therapy rehab centers work to increase or completely restore a person’s independence both at home and in the workplace. This can be done by adapting the task or the environment in such a way as to improve functional ability of a person, whether at home, work or even in leisure activities. Occupational therapy rehab centers can also improve the lives of children suffering from developmental delays, down syndrome and even autism.

Another type of rehabilitation center is that of chronic pain management. Chronic pain is pain which lasts for six months or longer and can be caused by both injury and illness. Chronic pain sufferers experience constant pain which can fluctuate from moderate to severe and treatment that works for one person may or may not work for another. Illnesses such as cancer, fibromyalgia, multiple sclerosis and even rheumatoid arthritis as well as brain disorders can cause chronic pain. Doctors who specialize in the treatment of chronic pain are in a relatively new branch of medicine. Treatments for chronic pain range from level one, which is the least invasive and least expensive to level three, where more expensive treatments, such as surgery, are tried in an attempt to increase the comfort of those suffering from chronic pain.

For those individuals who do suffer from an addiction, such as alcoholism, an alcohol rehab center is often the best option for them to defeat their addiction. Alcoholism is an addiction that affects thousands of Americans every year and for many addicts, they need the structure and professional services found at rehab centers. Through a variety of treatment options, often led by former addicts, people suffering from addiction can learn other coping mechanisms and get help from medical professionals to end the cycle of addiction.
